The first African-American woman ever elected to the Ohio Court of Appeals, Judge Patricia Ann Blackmon, will deliver the commencement address at the Geauga County Bar Association Law Day Luncheon in 11:30 a.m., April 29, at Guido’s Event Center, 12809 Chillicothe Road in Chester Township.
The recently retired judge is set to speak on the theme of this year’s Law Day, “Towards a More Perfect Union: The Constitution in a Time of Change,” focusing on her experiences growing up in the South and her great migration to Cleveland, according to a Liberation press release.
Richard “Rick” Warner, senior investigator with the Geauga County District Attorney’s Office, will receive the Law Enforcement Officer of the Year award for his efforts leading to the conviction of Robert McWilliams on state and federal charges related to the victimization of various minors.
The bar association will also honor the winners of the 2022 Essay Contest for High School Students at the event. They are:
• First place – Parker O’Keefe, a junior at Hawken School
• Second place – Antonio Vitale, senior at Notre Dame Latin Cathedral
• Third place – Frances Connors, senior at Hawken School
The Geauga County Bar Association celebrates Law Day each year with programs designed to help people understand how the law keeps people free and how the legal system strives to achieve justice.
