On Saturday, May 18, 2019, in the dazzling Blue Police Officer Donald J. Trump Ballroom of the Trump National Doral, the Dade County Police Benevolent Association honored South Florida’s best first responders at the 26th Annual Law Enforcement Awards Gala . On the occasion of their largest gala to date, there were almost 1,000 law enforcement officers, family members, local and state government officials, donors and a very special speaker: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Over an evening that included an elegant cocktail, dinner, dancing, live music and color presentation by a multi-agency honor guard, the best of South Florida came together to celebrate and remember the officers who keep our communities safe. Emmy Award-winning news anchor and Local 10 News co-host Calvin Hughes led esteemed guests through a memorable program of coveted awards and tributes. There was not a dry eye in the room when the lights dimmed and a video was released to commemorate the fallen officers, or when PBA President Steadman Stahl paid tribute to the family of Officer Jermaine Brown, a beloved Miami-Dade police officer who tragically died in the line of duty in December 2018, with the 2018 Rhett McGregor Memorial.

Miami-Dade Correctional Officer David Ivery won the 2018 Correctional Officer of the Year award for saving three lives from a vehicle that overturned on I-95, and Police Chief of FIU Alexander Casas and North Miami Police Chief Larry Juriga both received the Fred Maas. Price. Among the impressive finalists, Doral Police Sergeant Luis Celas, Doral Officers Alberto Tellez, Scott Demby and Ralph Cuan, and Miami-Dade Police Officer Joseph Azrak were all named Officers of the Year. 2018 for their heroic efforts exactly a year ago, when they took down a gunman at the Trump National Doral just steps from the venue where this year’s gala was held.

While this annual event officially honors the brave men and women who wake up each morning and selflessly put their lives on the line, not a day goes by that their bravery is not appreciated. This sentiment was echoed in Governor DeSantis’ remarks, “You are not only performing heroic service; you render an indispensable service to a free society. From the governor’s office to here, thank you for what you do. You are making Miami-Dade County a better place, and law enforcement across Florida is making Florida a better, freer state through your sacrifices. “
